After spending more than two decades in jail for the crime he did not committed, Steven Avery filed suit against Manitowoc County, Wis. and a host of others who were involved in his arrest. Then, shortly after, Avery found himself behind bars once more being charged with the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Halbach was last seen on the property of Avery which was where she was scheduled to shoot the vehicle. Avery and her nephew Brendan Dassey were tried and (spoiler alert) found guilty of the incident. However, that’s not the end to the tale. The moment Columbia master students Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos studied the case of Avery and thought the story could be an fascinating documentary. They were not PBS or HBO was interested in the idea, however Netflix adopted their idea to create the docuseries that drew plenty of attention and spurred petitions to have Avery’s story reviewed, although officials from Wisconsin claim all evidence is not included in the show.
