Advancements in technology and science have contributed to the colonization of the moon, the commercialization of outer space, along with the formation of big distance companies. Ai Tanabe, a upbeat girl whose interests lie at the cosmos, joins Technora Corporation as a part of the Debris Section, a division specializing in the elimination of hazardous space junk involving the orbits of the Earth and Moon. But Ai soon finds how unappreciated her occupation is. Since the laughingstock of Technora, the Debris Section is badly understaffed, poorly financed, and is made to utilize a dilapidated spaceship known as the”Toy Box” for debris restoration. Undeterred, Ai perseveres and slowly becomes familiar with the odd personalities which constitute the Debris Section’s team, like the bumbling but good-natured chief clerk Philippe Myers; the cryptic and tight-lipped temp employee Edelgard Rivera; along with the hotheaded and enthusiastic Hachirouta Hoshino, that yearns for a spaceship to call his very own. Planetes is a unconventional sci-fi show that defines the vastness of space as a background for the lives of everyday people individuals who might have been born on Earth, but whose dreams and fantasies lie among the stars.
