Kohachi Inugami is a detective who is skilled in the occult. He arrives in a remote village in Japan to investigate a series of strange incidents involving rotten and mutilated animals that are appearing seemingly without reason. Inugami spots a young boy in the fields while surveying. The young farmerhand, who is evaded by his peers and nicknamed “Dorotabou” because of his smell, is shocked that anyone would be interested in him.
Inugami is intrigued and asks Dorotabou to help him in his investigation. Dorotabou is unaware that this investigation will uncover a new world for him: one of the Kemono-like beast-like entities, which exist in tandem with humans. This will also give him a new purpose.
