Ibuki Keita, a high school student, has suffered from misfortune since childhood. Everyone around him ends up dying tragically, for no apparent reason. He refuses to be too close to anyone, not even his childhood friend Akane. Keita is left alone with a life of misery, disgrace, and despair.
Keita is eating at his favorite ramen restaurant one evening when he meets Kuro, a young girl. Kuro is a Mototsumitama, a woman who has extraordinary abilities. Keita hears her explain about Terra, a life-energy force that splits between three identically shaped people. This phenomenon is known as the “Doppeliner System.” Kuro, a Mototsumitama guards the “Coexistence Equilibrium”, the beings who protect Terra’s flow around the globe. Keita is unwilling to believe her story until he finds himself caught in the middle of this hidden world. He is on the brink of his death and makes a contract to Kuro. He is now bound to Kuro and must be there at all times. Is Keita’s misfortune worse?
