Mikiya Kokutou, a 1995 winter resident, passes a young woman on a late-night snowshoe walk. Shiki Ryougi, dressed in a striking white Kimono and displaying an enigmatic look, smiles at Mikiya. Mikiya meets Shiki Ryougi at the high school entrance ceremony. They have lunchtime conversations and become friends. Mikiya discovers more about Shiki’s unique childhood as she opens up to him.
Mifune City is witness to a string of shocking murders. These murders, which appear to be related, are especially brutal and warrant a thorough police investigation. Mikiya gets insight into the investigation because of the work of his cousin as a police detective. Mikiya is concerned for Shiki’s safety and decides to watch her.
